Most people don’t know what’s important to look for when buying a massage gun. I wanted to help, because if you buy the wrong one you might as well throw it away.
Massage guns are all the rage for recovery, and for good reason. I’m no spring chicken at nearly 40 years old. I competed on the TV show American Ninja Warrior season 11 in Tacoma and Vegas Finals. A massage gun has been a game changer for my warm up, performance, and recovery!
We will look at power, usability & value. You will know what you need to know in order buy the right massage gun for you!

Power
Speed
how many beats per minute. Most massage guns have enough speed to be effective and I usually find myself only needing about 3 speeds. More isn’t usually bad though.
Amplitude
Most massage guns have 10-16mm amplitude. This determines how hard it “hits” you. The bigger the number the harder the deeper it goes into the muscle. Most are at 12mm.
Stall Force
Stall force is the amount of pressure it takes to stop the motor. This is the biggest deciding factor and the massage guns, and it’s also one of the hardest to get actual data on. Some report higher numbers, but don’t match in using it.
Usability
Case & Attachments
A carrying case is great to travel with and to store it. I sometimes just throw my massage in my bag though. You don’t need a lot of attachments. If you only had one you’d still get the job done, however like speeds, more the merrier.
Noise
You will want a quiet massage gun otherwise you will not use it much. Look for one under 60dB for sure, but anything in the 40s is incredible.
Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the most overlooked. Some just feel right in the hand with curved edges and button placement in the right position. This is also obviously somewhat user preference though.
Value
You have to decide where you sit on price vs quality vs options. Generally you have to pick 2 of those. I will say though that you can get some pretty good quality massage guns for right around $100. No reason to spend several hundred dollars on one, especially if you aren’t a personal trainer using it several hours a day.
